Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) belongs to the breadfruit family Moraceae. Jackfruit is native to the tropical Asian region and can be found in many countries including Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, China, and the Philippines. The jack fruit tree usually grows up to 15-20 meters. Jackfruit wood is famous for its strength and durability. It is widely used in the production of furniture, doors, and windows.

Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit on the planet and it can weigh 55 kg (120 pounds). Jackfruit occupies a significant place in South and Southeast Asian gastronomy. The unripe jackfruit is cooked and consumed as a vegetable or alone. This nutritious fruit is recognized as a staple food in some countries and the Sri Lankan context, it is renowned as “Bath Gasa”(rice tree). The fleshy, gold color ripe fruit is extremely delicious.
